Truebeatz: Crafting Emotion Through Sound

Jamon Turner, better known as Truebeatz, is a Cincinnati-born music producer who has been shaping the sounds of R&B and Southern Hip-Hop for nearly two decades. His journey into music production started in 2004 in an unexpected way—through video game consoles. Using Sony PlayStation games like EJay Club World and Music Maker, he first dabbled in beat-making before deciding to take it seriously in 2008. That year, he moved to Athens, Alabama, where he transformed his mother’s garage into a home studio and honed his craft using FL Studio 9, an AKAI MPD24, and an M-Audio 49 keyboard.

The Inspiration Behind My Childhood

Truebeatz’s latest beat tape, My Childhood, is a deeply personal project that channels emotions from his early years. He reveals that the pain of growing up without his father, who struggled with addiction, left a lasting impact on him. “My Pops left when I was around 5 or 6 and got on drugs real bad. I grew up thinking he didn’t care, and it wasn’t fun seeing him high off crack. All that pain built up inside of me, and now it’s time for me to release it,” he shares. This emotional weight translates into the music, giving the project a sad yet soulful Hip-Hop feel.

A Signature Sound

Truebeatz’s production style is a fusion of R&B, Southern Hip-Hop, and East Coast samples. His biggest inspirations include Devante Swing, Kanye West, and Just Blaze. “I listened to a lot of Dipset back in my younger days,” he says, crediting their influence on his approach to music. With My Childhood, he is experimenting with jazzy Lo-Fi elements while still incorporating signature sampled sounds.

The Creative Process and Challenges

For this project, Truebeatz is playing with various samples, particularly leaning into a jazzy, melancholic atmosphere. While working on the beat tape, he encountered creative blocks but found a way to overcome them. “Getting beat blocks and staying focused were the biggest challenges. I overcame them by stepping away from the project for a few days and coming back more focused and motivated.”

So far, his favorite track from the project is the title track, My Childhood, which features a slow, sorrowful sample provided by DJ Pain. DJ Pain also plays a collaborative role in the project, supplying key sounds while Truebeatz lays down the drums.

Expanding His Reach

Truebeatz’s music is steadily gaining recognition beyond his hometown. His instrumental “Sexy You Are” was featured as background music on Bravo TV’s Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. His beats have also been placed in retail stores and restaurants worldwide, giving his work an international audience.

For those looking to explore Truebeatz’s discography, his music is available on all streaming platforms under the name Jamon Turner. His beat store, jamonturnermuzik.net, provides direct access to his latest works.

What’s Next for Truebeatz?

With My Childhood in the works, Truebeatz is already looking ahead. Once the beat tape is released, he plans to continue producing and selling beats while promoting his existing projects, Where I’m From and Welkome to tha Hood. His dedication to the craft and ability to translate deep emotions into music ensure that his work will continue to resonate with listeners worldwide.
